Description: A vast majority of people with disabilities in Georgia live without family support, abandoned and relegated to long-term institutions where they end up living for many years or the rest of their lives. People in institutions are often mistreated, abused, and completely isolated from the rest of society. Hand in Hand, a pioneer NGO in developing alternatives to institutionalization in Georgia, has spearheaded the establishment of the first community-based home for people with disabilities in the country. As thousands of people continue to be locked up in institutions, there is an urgent need for governments and donors to support initiatives like the Hand in Hand home. This project was funded by the Open Society Mental Health Initiative and the Open Society Georgia Foundation.
